Aneeta Prem CEO Update October 2024

Dear Friends and Members,

I hope this message finds you well. I’m writing to share important updates and to invite you to participate in several upcoming events central to our ongoing efforts to raise awareness and provide support for those living with Trigeminal Neuralgia (TN).

National Webinar on Gamma Knife Surgery

On Monday, 7th October, Trigeminal Neuralgia Awareness Day, we’ll be hosting a national webinar to mark the occasion. The webinar will be via zoom and will feature Mr Jonathan Hyam, a highly renowned consultant brain and comprehensive spinal neurosurgeon at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery in London.

With over twenty years of experience, Mr Hyam specialises in managing and treating a wide range of conditions, including spinal disorders (back pain, sciatica, brachialgia, cervical stenosis), myelopathy/radiculopathy, peripheral nerve disorders (carpal tunnel syndrome, ulnar nerve compression), and cranial conditions such as trigeminal neuralgia, hydrocephalus, Parkinson’s disease, and dystonia. His interests include Gamma Knife stereotactic radiosurgery, deep brain stimulation, cranioplastic reconstruction, and disc prolapse treatment, as well as expertise in using focused ultrasound for treating tremors.

Attendees will also have the opportunity to submit questions in advance for Mr Hyam’s talk.

Trigeminal Neuralgia Awareness Day

As the UK observes Trigeminal Neuralgia Awareness Day, it is vital we raise awareness of this condition, often described as one of the most painful in medical literature. You can get involved in our “Show TN the Three Fingers” initiative:

  • Take a photo or video holding up three fingers to show your support.
  • Share your photo or video on Facebook and Twitter, using the hashtags #FaceOfTN and #ShowTN3Fingers.
  • Spread the word by encouraging others to participate, asking, “Are you brave enough to Show TN 3 Fingers?”
  • Make a donation to support our ongoing work by texting TNA05 to 704070 to donate £5.
You can also visit our shop, which is especially relevant as Christmas approaches—our Christmas cards are now available.

By participating, whether through sharing photos, spreading the message, or donating, you will help raise awareness and show solidarity with those affected by TN.

Introducing Phil, Our New Fundraising Coordinator

I’m also pleased to introduce our new Fundraising Coordinator. Phil brings a wealth of experience and enthusiasm to our team and is ready to assist anyone interested in fundraising or organising events. He can provide ideas, guidance, and support.

Please  contact [email protected] or on 07990 292 207.

Support Robert and His Colleagues in the Press-Up Challenge

We’d like to highlight the efforts of Robert Noddings, who has shown remarkable resilience in facing the challenges of Trigeminal Neuralgia. Diagnosed at the age of 24, Robert has endured intense, electric-shock-like pain. Last year, he underwent Microvascular Decompression (MVD), a complex brain surgery, which has provided some relief, though he remains alert to potential future challenges.

This November, Robert and his colleagues at Pets at Home in Hartlepool will be taking on a press-up challenge, aiming to complete 14,000 push-ups to raise awareness and funds for TNA UK. Their dedication is an inspiring example of how individuals can support the charity’s mission. You can support their efforts by visiting  Robert’s blog and donating via their JustGiving page.

Volunteer Opportunities with TNA

If you are interested in volunteering for TNA, we have several exciting opportunities available:

Regional Support Group Leads:
If you are a good organiser and enjoy meeting people with Trigeminal Neuralgia (TN), consider hosting your own regional support meetings. Bringing people together reduces isolation and provides a platform for understanding and support. This role is incredibly rewarding and can make a significant difference in the lives of those affected by TN. If you’re interested, please let us know.

Helpline Volunteers:
We are seeking dedicated individuals to join our Helpline team. This role involves providing support and information to those who reach out for help. You will receive comprehensive training, and the experience is highly rewarding, offering a vital lifeline to many people. Additionally, we need volunteers for our E-Helpline, which involves responding to emails from individuals seeking assistance.

Fundraising Volunteers:
We are also looking for individuals interested in various forms of fundraising. Whether it’s running a marathon, organising a ‘Tea for TNA’ event, or coming up with innovative local fundraising ideas, your efforts can greatly benefit the charity. Fundraising is essential to our work, enabling us to continue providing support and resources to those in need.

Please let us know if you are interested in any of these roles, and we will get back to you at our earliest convenience. Volunteering with TNA is a meaningful way to contribute to the community and make a positive impact.
